5 things to consider before selecting an elevator installation & services company
At Western Elevator, we pride ourselves on educating customers so they can make the most informed and confident decisions possible.
Finding a company that ensures reliability, safety, transparent communication, and long-term satisfaction should always be top of mind when deciding who services or installs your elevator.
This blog post aims to guide you in that selection process, providing valuable insights and considerations to help you make the right choice. Our intention is to offer educational information so you can make the best possible decision for your unique transportation needs.
1. Elevator Mechanic License (licensed in your state) and Experience
Ensure the company you choose is licensed in the state in which you need an elevator installed or serviced. Each state has different policies and practices that need to be adhered to, and should only be done by an elevator mechanic licensed in that state. In addition to the license, be sure to ask about the elevator mechanic’s experience. Some mechanics have only ever worked on commercial elevators, others have only installed residential…some have experience with both. It’s important to find out their experience level with your particular need.
2. Safety and Compliance
Safety should be a top priority when selecting an elevator service provider. Ensure the company adheres to all relevant safety standards and regulations, such as those outlined by the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIIPA) and state-specific codes (for example: check out this list of Montana state elevator codes).
3. Large Company or Locally-Owned
There are many large elevator companies out there (think: Otis, Kone, and Schindler to name a few) who can no doubt provide you with a safe, smooth ride. But, larger elevator companies (even with a local office) stem from a corporate structure. While they will without a doubt, service or install an elevator to your needs, oftentimes communication isn’t as direct, wait times are longer, and there is a focus on a larger contract size. Locally-owned and operated elevator installation and service companies, like Western Elevator or Bluestone Elevator here in Montana, are just as equipped, skilled, and dedicated to ensuring a safe and smooth ride–you’re also usually speaking directly to the owner and elevator mechanic on the other end of the phone (rather than a sales team) and at the job site. Locally-owned shops are also much more flexible on contract size and pricing, not to mention familiar with the area, have 1:1 relationships with local contractors, and so much more.
4. Maintenance and Support
Regular maintenance is crucial for ensuring the smooth operation and longevity of your elevator system (not to mention, required by most states). Be sure to inquire about the maintenance plans and support services offered by the company. A reputable provider will have a comprehensive maintenance program in place, including routine inspections, repairs, and 24/7 emergency support to address any unforeseen issues promptly. In the state of Montana for example, it is required to have a licensed elevator mechanic inspect and sign off on your elevator each year (and every 5 years for a load test).
5. Transparency and Communication
Effective communication is essential throughout the entire service or installation process. Seek a company that demonstrates transparency in their operations, pricing, and timelines. Clear communication ensures that you are well informed about the progress of the project, any potential disruptions, and the associated costs. Oftentimes, the installation of your elevator requires the involvement of a 3rd party contractor that the elevator company will work very closely with. It’s important that they keep you “in the know” on all components of your project and answer your questions directly.
Are there more things to consider when selecting an elevator installation and services company? Sure. But, this list is a great place to start. By focusing on experience, safety, maintenance, and, good communication you can make an informed decision. Remember, your priority should be finding a consultant-like partner who genuinely understands your unique needs and is committed to delivering exceptional service. Take your time, ask the right questions, and choose wisely to ensure a smooth and successful elevator experience for years to come.
